Dr. Cholevas’s research regards the investigation of the effect of drugs sildenafil and bosentani on idiopathic pulmonary hypertension (IPAH) in the expression of metalloproteases and glycosaminoglycans, on primary cultures of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC). Specifically, Dr. Cholevas and colleagues found that the molecules of the extracellular matrix such as glycosaminoglycans, particularly hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans, and the gelatinases, are involved in the pathophysiology of IPAH and could be potential pharmacological targets in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. The effect of sildenafil and bosentani, administered in the treatment of IPAH, indicate probable beneficial effects due to the restoration of gene expression levels of proteoglycans to normal, but the statistical significance remains to be shown on a larger number of patients. Dr.  Cholevas has received scholarships from the State Scholarship Foundation (Ι.Κ.Υ. Greece), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity (Κ.Ε.Σ.Υ.).
